New Product
New product development has many crucial stages, Picking the right name is as important as the product specification itself if you plan to market it.
We just started a new product line for one of our clients. Naming it took a lot of research and little luck. Great names whether for a company, business or product seldom comes from any one source. The final result is often so simple that you could kick yourself.
Our new line will be Teak outdoor furniture by designer Glenn madden. We did not want to use the name Glenn since we recently started promoting the main company name as Glenn Furniture. Our partner that will carry this line of outdoor furniture is also looking at it as being the sole distributor for now so he wants the name to be generic, not related to us the supplier company.
We had to come up with something that was easy to remember, short, and related to outdoor, Teak or garden furniture.
I went through all the names I already have at first. But most of the names I have are focused on being keywords to support Glenn Furniture brand. Things like http://picnicchairs.com are great to get some extra traffic, but make stupid sounding brand names. Impossible to trademark. Plus these type of names are limited line of products. SOOOO, I scratched my head, scratched through hours of research and finally came up with what I think is the perfect BRAND NAME. It has keywords in it which will help getting listed. But it is open to the whole of outdoor furniture products range.
Like a light bulb or maybe the hours of picking through "Teak Outdoor" keyword phrases I found what I was looking for..
TeakOut just leave off the door.
I spent the rest of the day developing a logo.
Then I put it out to a vote for my facebook friends to vote on.
PLEASE TELL ME WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE.

I will develop the site design around the logo next.
LASTLY, it occurred to me this is really a great brand name.
If it goes as well as I think it will the name alone will become a valuable asset over the next two years.
I will build up the brand and show only our partner as the sole distributor for now.
It will look to the public from all points as being a product line developed special for and by our partner.
I do not plan to put my name anywhere visible publicly or anyone else.
BUT,
The Teak Out product line designs I will develop soon will remain property of myself.
I was clear up front that I will retain ownership of the brand and if any company that develops around it in the future.
We can discuss how it looks as I develop it.
IF my partner wants to buy the name now and pay me a reasonable fee for developing it and the products then I would consider selling it to them.
Two years from now it want be so reasonable.
Finally un-veiling of the name if you did not look at the photos already.
